Training for increased strength and mass requires the athlete to push the muscles to lift heavy weights until they are exhausted. The following adaptations occur with training:
• Exposure of muscle to large forces (heavy weight) causes muscle cell damage and muscle soreness. It also causes genetic and hormonal changes that stimulate muscle cells to grow and strengthen
• Muscle cells repair and then produce more proteins to create larger and stronger cells
• These muscle cells also become more efficient at using quick forms of energy like Creatine (Creatine phosphate) to generate power and recover

Research Study: controlled 9 week study on trained men. HMB increased lean mass, decreased fat mass and resulted in a substantial increase in lower body strength. Read the research.
Research Study: A meta-analysis of existing research. HMB supplementation resulted in clear overall increases in strength in men starting a resistance training program, but that the benefit of HMB in trained athletes was smaller. Read the research.
